Buying an Obsolete Canon Camera Model.   by Tim Harris

Depending on what one mean by the word obsolete, the Canon
EOS-10s which was introduced in 1990 but no longer in
production, is still considered a state of the art camera.
Superseded by the A2 and A2E, the EOS-10s only lack the IR
remote and a built in intervalometer of the A2 series
models.. As such, many still consider the EOS-10s a good
choice for purchase for the EOS range of camera. Other Canon
models like the Rebel series are also pretty much identical.
For example, the Rebel and Rebel S were just earlier version
of the Rebel II and the Rebel II S. What lacking in the
earlier are just the "soft focus" feature, a 1/1000 second
top speed and the absence of a musical self-timer.

Another good choice of Canon Camera is the EOS 630
introduced in 1989. This model was later replaced by the
Elan Series. The Camera is actually more similar to the
EOS-1 than the EOS-10s or Elan series. It comes also with
features can't be found on many current Canon Cameras as
well. It has an all metal sub-frame, wired remote that
doesn't self cancel, interchangeable viewing screen and
illuminated LCD. Its main problem is that it is not well
designed ergonomically. It also has a lot of buttons that
require manual manipulation.

Another Canon EOS camera which is no longer in production
but is unique among the EOS series is the Canon EOS RT. The
Canon EOS RT is the only Canon SLR camera which comes with a
pellicle (fixed mirror) system. Besides having this unique
feature, the EOS RT is similar to the EOS 630. Other very
similar Canon cameras are the EOS 700, EOS 750 and EOS 850.
The EOS 700 is considered a minor upgraded camera from the
EOS 750. And between both the EOS 750 and EOS850, they are
both the same with only EOS having an internal Flash unit.

The EOS 620 and EOS 650 were the earlier version of the EOS
630. They have slower CPU and thus slower processing speed
for auto focusing and film transport speed. As such they
were not very popular. They first made their debut in 1987
but later discontinued three years later in 1990. Between
the two models, the EOS 650 is considered more rudimentary.
It lacks an illuminated LCD like those of the EOS 620. It
also does not have multiple exposure capability and auto
exposure bracketing.

When you are really deciding to buy an older Canon EOS
models, the EOS 10s, the EOS RT and EOS 630 are good
contenders even among later Canon models. As we have seen,
they have features which many of today's models do not
possess. In many ways, they can be considered good
professional grade cameras too. Take for example the first
rebel model; it comes with an analog metering scale in its
viewfinder. Lastly, the money you save can be a big deciding
factor too.
